Our look at a vibrant city or neighborhood.

Ann Arbor, MI

Less than an hour from Detroit, this college town makes for a charming and comfortable visit. Enjoy weekend tailgating at The Big House, or stay for a week to explore the city's foot-friendly downtown filled with over thirty independent bookstores, multiple performing arts theatres, and great ethnic food.

The University of Michigan is the foundation of Ann Arbor, an enormous world-class institute with exceptional science and medical programs. Taking a campus tour is a must! In addition to the university, the city's other major employers seem committed to Ann Arbor's backpack carrying residents – both Domino's Pizza and Borders Books (founded by two University of Michigan graduates) call Ann Arbor home.

You'll enjoy exploring downtown just west of the university, too. With your tennis shoes on, create a rectangle by shopping, dining, and people watching on East Liberty, Main Street, State Street, and East William. At night, check out a show at the historic Michigan Theater, or get a taste of the local music scene at The Blind Pig.

History buffs will want to visit The Gerald R. Ford Library & Museum (you’ll want a rental car for the museum portion, which is located two hours away in Grand Rapids). The Henry Ford Museum is another highlight of the area, located about 45 minutes away in Dearborn, MI.

While there are some nice hotels in the area, the B&B route is the way to go in Ann Arbor. Try the English Gothic Vitosha Guest Haus, or the Bellanina Guest House, one block from the Bellanina Day Spa.

Interesting products and inventions on the horizon...

Do you print online recipes and keep them on the counter while cooking? Despite your best efforts to keep the recipes clean, do you still get butter and milk and sauce on your recipes? Or perhaps you've been bold enough to skip the printer entirely and plop the old laptop right next to the stove. Luckily, your precarious recipe days will end with the coo.boo, a spatula shaped digital cookbook that synchs with your PC to download recipes and how-to's. The coo.boo, designed by student Philipp Gilgen, is rugged, washable, and blends in nicely with standard kitchen tools.

Would you buy this?
Can't wait!
Meh.

Condo Considerations

I've been researching and talking about condos for over a year now in anticipation of actually buying one myself. I've talked with condo owners, realtors, and lenders. I've read articles, books, and Web sites. I've even toured a few properties to see what they're like. After all this research, here are my top issues to consider when you're deciding whether a condo is right for you.
