Our look at a vibrant city or neighborhood.
Less than an hour from Detroit, this college town makes for a charming
and comfortable visit. Enjoy weekend tailgating at The Big House, or
stay for a week to explore the city's foot-friendly downtown filled
with over thirty independent bookstores, multiple performing arts
theatres, and great ethnic food.
The University of Michigan is the
foundation of Ann Arbor, an enormous world-class institute with
exceptional science and medical programs. Taking a campus
tour is a must! In addition to the university, the city's other
major employers seem committed to Ann Arbor's backpack carrying
residents – both Domino's Pizza and Borders Books (founded by two
University of Michigan graduates) call Ann Arbor home.
You'll enjoy exploring downtown just west of the university, too. With
your tennis shoes on, create
a rectangle by shopping, dining, and people watching on East
Liberty, Main Street,
State Street, and East William. At night, check out a show at the
historic Michigan Theater, or get
a taste of the local music scene at The Blind Pig.
History buffs will want to visit The Gerald R. Ford Library & Museum (you’ll want a rental car for the museum portion, which is located two hours away in Grand Rapids). The Henry Ford Museum is another highlight of the area, located about 45 minutes away in Dearborn, MI.
While there are some nice hotels in the area, the B&B route is the way
to go in Ann Arbor. Try the English Gothic Vitosha Guest Haus, or the Bellanina
Guest House, one block from the Bellanina Day Spa.
- Amadeus Restaurant
Enjoy a fine selection of authentic Central European dishes, from Budapest Pancakes and Pierogi, to Hungarian Goulash and beyond. On the weekends, live classical musicians perform during dinner.
- Café Zola
Sweet French-inspired food awaits you at Café Zola. Crepes are the house favorite, with tantalizing dessert and main entrée crepes available. With a robust wine & cocktail list, Café Zola is perfect for a nightcap, too.
