Feeling that settled-in feeling…

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Since the painting is done for the year, and we’re in a holding pattern until we can put in fall bulbs, we don’t have much to do except enjoy our new place. There are, of course, the random boxes I’ve shoved into the corners of the basement, but let’s not discuss those now.

Here’s the reading room:

Here’s the kitchen that’s put on hold until the spring. Any color suggestions to go with the pumpkin colored den?:

The den I speak of:

And we even bought tennis rackets so we can play next door! Here’s our local courts and our white fence in the background:

Turns out we suck at tennis. But, we can only improve.

Right?

So, I’ve been researching gardening these days. I’ve grown flowers in pots before, but never anything outside in the vast and dangerous ground. I’ve learned:

  • I’m in zone five on the “hardiness map”, and I must keep my zone in mind when purchasing plants and flowers.
  • Most perennial bulbs should go in the ground of zone five regions between mid-Sept and mid-Oct.
  • One should not mulch (cover with bark, wood chips, hay, etc.) until the first frost. Otherwise, the flowers will get warm and antsy, and will think it’s time to push through the soil in their spring-like environment.
  • There are around 75 species of hydrangeas. Before I knew their name, I assumed that all “flowering bushes” were the same.
  • To this note, we recently had a housewarming party. See?

And we received many helpful gardening books. I’m determined to make something grow in our empty flower beds! Wish me luck!

Wasn’t there some ‘recycle rap’ in elementary school?

Growing up, we had to make a quarterly payment to our township for recycling fees. In Los Angeles, there wasn’t a recycling program. My roommate joked that the homeless population was the recyling program. Here in Madison, we’re each provided with a big green dumpster, and a big brown dumpster for being taxpayers.

What’s the recycling scene (or lack thereof) like in your neighborhood?
